The pets of the family can be extremely helpful in grief and recovery. This is for both the parents and the siblings of the lost child. A pet can provide comfort with their unconditional love. They can also provide one on one consoling as an ear to listen to or a shoulder to cry on.
But we must not forget that pets develop a connection to family members and will not understand why a family member is no longer present. While the family may use the animal as a comfort measure, they may also need to provide extra attention to it as it is confusing and sad. Animals react to the attitude of the family and may act out confusion or sadness. Remember dogs have feelings to as evidenced through public safety dogs (fire and law enforcement) who see their work efficiency decrease due to the loss or injury of their handler or the results of their mission. Give them a little extra attention as they adjust to the new family dynamic as the family has now changed size and is in the grieving process.
Therapy dogs, although not new to grievance support, are growing in popularity in treatment methodologies. They may be unbelievably valuable in assisting family members as they work through the grievance process.
This is where we come in. After Jen worked with Xu-Fei Kennel in Springfield Illinois for more than 6 months, I was chosen to fill the role of service dog for Jen. After some time, Jen decided to bring Greycie in to help me. Greycie comes from Lin Shan kennel in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Gramme comes from Xu-Fei Kennel in Springfield Illinois. Jen worked with Xu-Fei Kennel in Springfield Illinois, Jen got a call from Ann saying she had a new baby Pei that would fit in with Grunt & Greycie, Little Man’s Legacy foundation has become Gramme’s new home as of April 6, 2023. Gramme will train like Grunt and Greycie. Our job every day is to be Jen’s service dog and we are working hard to make sure we are there for her every day.
We are friendly and love to play so we can bring a smile to a sibling while Jen meets with the parents.
We are pure bred Chinese Shar Pei's Grunt was born January 13, 2019; Greycie was born December 11, 2019. Gramme was born January 24, 2023.
